Best Coffee Shops in Glasgow to Study
I think I speak for most students when I say the library is the worst building on campus. Its loud, busy and you can never get a seat at the booths with the charger space. Not to mention the criminally expensive and mediocre food and drink choices downstairs (I am looking at you Nourish cafe). Therefore it is no surprise that when I have coursework to complete I will avoid Andersonian library as much as I can choosing to retreat to the business building or Sir William Duncan building. However sometimes these buildings are equally as busy as the library so instead, the next best option is to go to one of the many coffee shops Glasgow has to offer and study there. There is a much better selection of food and hot drinks and at least when you pay £8 for a coffee and a sandwich it is at least worth your while. Going off campus to study is sometimes the best option and here are the best places to go to avoid the constant battle to find a seat with a charging spot in the library.
Starbucks - Buchanan Street
This one is not a shocker as this is a go-to for most students. Starbucks on Buchanan Street is the perfect medium between a quiet place to work but also not so silent that you can hear every scratch of a pen. Plenty of tables to study at with almost all of them with a close by charging spot. I have tested the Starbucks wifi on multiple occasions and it holds up well downloading, uploading and browsing social media which least be honest is how at least 20% of your time spent studying is going to go anyway. There's not much point me describing the Starbucks menu as everyone is familiar with the menu and its quality. Like most places, it is particularly busy between 5-6pm so I would recommend ordering a drink in advance through the mobile app or they offer table service for refills of hot drinks. A good place to be productive, have a good coffee and with the only issue, being is getting distracted by the people walking past the window, or even worse the shops outside.
Cafe Nero - Sauchiehall Street
To my surprise, there are way more Cafe Nero's in Glasgow than I would have first thought. Ten to be exact. However, to save you going to each location to pick your favourite I have done the work for you, it is the Sauchiehall Street branch. Slightly out of the way of the main line of shops this newly refurbished version is the best place to find a quiet spot to study. Many of the other stores have out of the door lines of ques where this one just seems to miss the rush hour commuters. Comfy seats and couches with two levels I would recommend trying this one out if you would like a change from your regular study place. Slightly more expensive food than Starbucks but it is worth it as well as free ice water refills for your water bottle and friendly staff.
Wilson Street Pantry
A laid-back cafe that was opened only a few years ago is a good place to go if you do not want to face walking up the hill which let's face it is always. A quiet place which offers a really good brunch menu and really good coffee is a good place to go if you would rather sit outside with a coffee and do some work. A place that is definitely worth trying if you have yet to visit!
Laboratorio Expresso
Located on West Nile Street which is handy for whatever direction you are coming from, this place offers somewhere to sit in or take away some of the best coffee you will find in Glasgow. The staff are so friendly and helpful and all of the drinks and cakes come well presented so you can show off to your friends on Snapchat that you have nice coffee instead of actually doing the work you came out to do. Limited seating is an issue but if you get there early, which I would recommend doing then you are all good to do a day of studying while drinking excellent coffee and eating some of their amazing cakes.
Well, there it is, a small guide to the best places to take your laptop to and get a cup of coffee to assist you on your coursework. Although there are many more coffee shops in Glasgow these have all been tried and tested and are a nice place to go, charger spots, decent wifi and most importantly, decent coffee which is not really asking for much I don't think.
Happy Studying/Sitting on Instagram with my place opened in the background!
